Lincoln County Circuit Clerk misuses $131,000

JACKSON – State Auditor Stacey Pickering said the circuit clerk for Lincoln County has been arrested and charged with misusing more than $131,000 in public funds over the last six years. Terry Lynn Watkins, was indicted for allegedly misusing and embezzling public funds.

Watkins, 57, of Brookhaven, was arrested on Nov. 2.

“Ms. Watkins accomplished her embezzlement scheme by transferring funds to which she was not entitled into her Operating Account for personal use,” said Pickering. “I appreciate the efforts of District Attorney Dewitt Bates in working with the Office of the State Auditor on this investigation.”

Watkins has since been released from jail.

Laney Grantham, of the state auditor’s office, said Watkins had been the circuit clerk for Lincoln County for 14 years.

She was released on her own recognizance.
