News Briefs From Across The State

Couple was hunting together in the woods

A Maben woman accused of shooting her husband in the back while they were hunting last year, won’t go to trial until November. Attorneys for Verina Marie Childs, 38, said they need more time to review the evidence in her case.

Childs was arrested in November 2009 after her husband, Douglas Marion Childs, 32, was found dead in western Okitbbeha County.

Authorities said Verina and her husband were hunting together near Hawkins Road and the Choctaw County line about 7 a.m., when other hunters in the area heard a gunshot.

Douglas Childs was found dead from a single gun shot wound.

Verina was immediately considered a suspect.

Escaped inmate caught by US Marshals

A Holmes County inmate that has escaped from that facility twice in the last six months has been captured, along with another suspect, by the US Marshals. Bruce Harrell, 42, has been taken into custody after checking into a hotel in Picayune.

Harrell escaped from the Holmes County jail on June 11.

Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said Harrell dieted long enough to squeeze through an air vent at the Holmes County jail. He climbed through the air duct onto the roof and then over a fence.

Harrell escaped from the jail in March 2010 after jamming a crushed milk carton in an exit door.

Some jail personnel were reprimanded for not checking Harrell’s bed following that escape, while other guards resigned.

Officials said Harrell has twice escaped from the jail in Durant and a prior work detail at another location.

Harrell was initially being held for arson.

The US Marshals also picked up Corey Wells of Leflore County who skipped town once he learned a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Wells was wanted for the alleged rape of a 14-year old girl.

Wells was transported to the Rankin County jail.
