Funeral home owner admits to misuse of funds

JACKSON – A Natchez funeral home owner has admitted in court that he did not place money collected from pre-arranged funeral plans in their proper trusts. Theodore “Bubba” West appeared in Adams County Circuit Court on Thursday, July 29, and entered an open plea to three counts of conversion. West, 59, refused to accept the State’s recommended sentence, and threw himself on the mercy of the court.

West is the owner of West Funeral Home in Natchez. He is charged with knowingly or intentionally exerting unauthorized control over the personal property of another.

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said Judge Al Johnson sentenced West to 30 years – 10 years for each count – to run concurrently, with 30 years suspended. West was placed on house arrest for one year with five years of post release supervision.

West must also pay all involved court costs and full restitution to his victims totaling $12,200. Those monies are due within 30 days.

West’s case was investigated by the Public Integrity Division of the Attorney General’s Office and prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Marvin Sanders.
