JACKSON – A 32-year old health care worker has been arrested and charged with sexual battery after authorities said she had sex with a 17-year patient. Tammie Shantay Gates, of Okolona, was arrested after turning herself in to investigators with the Medicaid Fraud Unit of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office on June 17.
Gates was indicted by a Copiah County Grand Jury on June 1, 2011 on charges that she had a sexual relationship with the teen in July 2009.
According to the indictment, Gates was employed as a psychiatric assistant at Millcreek of Pontotoc, a psychiatric residential treatment center, on or about July 31, 2009. The victim was a 17-year old resident of the facility who was on a pass and visiting a friend’s home in Crystal Springs.
Gates is accused of going to that residence and having sex with the teen there.
Following her arrest, Gates was transported to the Copiah County jail and her bond was set at $20,000. Her trial is slated for July 26.
If convicted, Gates faces up to 30 years in jail.
