Man arrested for beating mom with baseball bat

WEST POINT – A 22-year old man is being held on a $185,000 bond after authorities said he allegedly beat his mother and his little brother with a baseball bat. Jamar Shelton was arrested on June 14 after he reportedly stole a car after the alleged attack.

Sgt. Detective Carl Lampton, with the West Point Police Department, said around 11:28 p.m. on June 14, West Point Police responded to a 911 call for an ambulance at a residence in the 500 block of Avalon Street. They found Jamar’s mother, 49-year old Carolyn Shelton, there after she fled her home across the street following the attack.

“She had physical bruising,” Lampton said. “She had been beaten in the upper body and head [with the baseball bat].”

Police also questioned Carolyn’s younger son, 13-year old Jalen Shelton, who witnessed the attack and was also allegedly beaten by his brother.

“He was with his mother across the street,” Lampton said. “He had minor physical injuries from the assault.”

Carolyn and Jalen were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital for treatment. Jalen was later released after being treated for protrusions and abrasions and his mother remains hospitalized with broken bones and lacerations.

Lampton said when police went to Carolyn’s home where the alleged attack occurred, there were physical signs of an altercation.

“The entire home was in disarray,” he said. “The living room showed signs of a struggle, the kitchen, and there was blood found in the home.”

Lampton said officers first secured the scene and did a search for Jamar, but he fled the scene on foot.

Jamar was spotted about 3:30 a.m., Wednesday morning driving a 1999 Chevy Camaro he allegedly stole from the 45/50 Mart on Main Street in West Point.

Lampton said the owner of the vehicle reportedly went in the store to make a purchase and left the keys in the vehicle. Jamar was spotted in the car going east on Churchill Road and officers proceeded to follow him.

“They got behind him and stopped him at Marston Court, an apartment complex on Brame Avenue,” Lampton said. “He was arrested without incident.”

Jamar was charged with one count of domestic violence aggravated assault, one count of domestic violence simple assault and one count of grand larceny. His bond was set at $185,351 and he remains in custody.

Lampton said Jamar, who has prior criminal charges with the city of West Point, did not appear to be impaired at the time of his arrest, but a toxicology screen may be ordered during the course of the investigation.

Lampton also said no motive has been discovered for the attack and the weapon used in the alleged assault has not been recovered.
