The last remaining inmate mistakenly released from the Hinds County Detention Center is back in custody, WLBT reported.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department said aggravated assault suspect Germarkes Smith was taken into custody Friday, Dec. 14.

Classes resume in Newtown, minus Sandy Hook

Newtown returned its students to their classrooms Tuesday for the first time since last week’s massacre and faced the agonizing task of laying others to rest, as this grieving town wrestled with the same issues gripping the country: violence, gun control and finding a way forward.

Funerals were held for two more of the tiny fallen, a 6-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl. A search continues for two men who allegedly stole a safe full of cash from a Dollar General in Pontotoc County.

The burglary happened during the early morning hours of Dec. 10 on Highway 278 in Pontotoc.

Authorities said one man is dead and his father and a third man are injured after a shooting in Lucedale.

WLOX-TV reports the shooting happened Sunday after an argument over a man “doing donuts” — or spinning his truck in circles — in a field.

Female inmate dies in Marion Co. jail

Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate in the Marion County Jail.

The Hattiesburg American reports 25-year-old Samantha Gatlin of the Foxworth community was discovered in her cell on Dec. 11.

Deputies said medical assistance was rendered at the scene by the jail’s nursing staff until AAA Ambulance Service arrived on the scene.

Mississippi’s Freeze receives raise, extension

Mississippi football coach Hugh Freeze has received a one-year contract extension and a $500,000 raise, increasing his base salary to $2 million per season after leading the Rebels to a bowl appearance in his first season.

Freeze was hired last December and signed an incentive-laden contract that included a $1.5 million base salary. His new contract lasts through 2016 and includes a $100,000 bonus per Southeastern Conference win, beginning with the second victory of the season. […]

Woman dies in Alcorn County accident

An Alcorn County woman has died following a one-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon, WTVA reported.

Alcorn County Coroner Jay Jones said Dorothy Colston, 82, was headed east on County Road 510 when she apparently ran off the road, then overcorrected, causing her vehicle to flip and hit a ditch.

Colston was ejected from the vehicle. Authorities said she was not wearing a seat belt.
