MDOT and partners dedicate Habitat home in Jackson

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) recently held a dedication ceremony for a Habitat for Humanity project in which employees from both agencies volunteered hours of their time to help construct a beautiful 1,200 square foot home for Pedro and Shawn Galloway.
 
The ceremony was held Monday, June 17, in front of the Habitat home, located on Englewood Street in Jackson. Representatives from each agency gave remarks about the project, including: MDOT Central Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall; Vice President, Habitat for Humanity Metro Jackson, Johnny Ray; Deputy Attorney General Mike Lanford; Assistant Attorney General Roy Tipton; and Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity Metro Jackson, Cindy Griffin. MDOT to Begin Widening of I-55 in Hinds County

On Monday, June 3, Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the James Construction Group closed the Elton  Road overpass on I-55 in Hinds County as part of the widening project on I-55 from Byram to McDowell Road.

Super load to move through State today

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has issued a permit allowing the Parrott Transport Company to move a 77.5 ton ‘super load’ through the southern part of Mississippi on Tuesday, May 7.
 
Beginning 30 minutes after sunrise, The Parrott Transport Company will move an 80 foot long, 20 foot wide, and 13 foot, 6 inch high ‘upper structure’ from the Louisiana state line at Highway 26 to the Alabama state line at Interstate 20. Local law enforcement officers will be on scene to assist in escorting the load across the state. […]

Senate confirms McGrath as MDOT executive director

The Mississippi Senate has approved the appointment of Melinda McGrath, P.E. to remain executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT). The Senate approved McGrath’s appointment began April 1 and will end April 1, 2017, unless it is further extended.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) will show Mississippians at several events an up-close look at the tragic consequences that can occur when persons choose to drive or travel while impaired, distracted, or without buckling up.

MDOT commemorates fallen workers and promotes work zone safety

A gust of wind kicks up a trail of dust as forty tons of metal on wheels speeds past. A car full of children waving their hands passes a flagman on the side of the road. A teenager heading to class looks down for a spilt second to check his phone, and then disaster strikes.

Every day, men and women face these dangers in work zones across Mississippi. Truthfully, a lot of road crews never see a fatality during their time on the job, but it happens more frequently than one might think. The month of April is when the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) joins other agencies and companies around the nation to raise awareness for work zone safety and to commemorate workers who have been fatally injured on the job.

Over the past couple weeks, MDOT has coordinated multiple events through the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Center and Traffic Engineering Safety Programs to raise awareness of the realistic dangers of work zones and promote safer driving habits. […]

5th Annual Safety Fair set for Saturday

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and other Mississippians are planning for a fun and educational day at the 5thAnnual Safety Fair on Saturday, April 6. The event will be held at the Mississippi Trade Mart from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the fairgrounds in Jackson.

The Safety Fair is a free event that’s open to everyone.  
 
Attendees will get a chance to participate in many activities that promote MDOT’s goal of improving the safety of motorists and pedestrians by educating children and parents about child passenger safety, the dangers of distracted driving, and occupant protection. Some of the attractions include the “Rover” safety rollover demonstration, impaired driving simulations (SIDNE) as well as the low-speed simulation of a head on collision, the “Convincer.” MDOT’s virtual texting and driving simulator will also return to the event. MDOT seizes $500k in drugs from truck at weigh station

Enforcement officers with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) stopped an 18-wheeler for a routine weight and safety check and discovered at least 500 pounds of marijuana.

MDOT officials said the incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on Dec. 12. The officers stopped a 1999 Freightliner tractor and van trailer at the eastbound I-59 Lauderdale inspection facility, for a routine weight, safety and paperwork inspection.
