In Memoriam: Marshall Alexander, Jr.

Marshall Alexander, Jr. was born on May 5, 1944 in DeKalb, Mississippi, to Marshall Alexander and Mary Callaway-Alexander. He joined the Unity Springs Baptist Church in DeKalb, Mississippi, as a youth and joined Allen Chapel A.M.E. in Meridian, Mississippi, as an adult. After moving from Meridian to Jackson, he joined New Hope Baptist Church and attended Pearl Street A.M.E. Church.

Marshall was drafted into the U. S, Army and served two combat tours as an Infantryman during the Vietnam Conflict. He also served in the Air National Guard from which he retired after twenty years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following his tour of active military service, Marshall enrolled at Jackson State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. He was employed as a teacher of mathematics and science in the Kemper County School System for a number of years.

His civic and community involvement included administrative executive of the United Way with special attention to the Boy Scouts of America and Junior Achievement, and as an alcohol and drug counselor for the Weems Community Health Center in Meridian, Mississippi.

Marshall entered the real estate profession and became owner of his own businesses. He opened Sound Homes, Inc., and Alexander Realty, both real estate and construction firms. Subsequently, he worked as a mortgage lender for Realty Mortgage, now Overland Mortgage Company.

At the conclusion of his life, Marshall had taught in excess of 1,000 students, assisted in producing over 25 Eagle Scouts, built over 300 new homes and renovated countless more.  Over the course of fourteen years in the mortgage industry, Marshall assisted in excess of 1,680 new home buyers in purchasing new homes and achieving their piece of the American Dream. Marshall lived a life of service to his country and his community. The number of lives that he touched and influenced are’ innumerable, and his legacy of service will be a shining example to all.

Marshall was called to his eternal rest on Sunday, August 15, 2010. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Callaway-Alexander, his father, Marshall Alexander, stepmother, Lillian Alexander, eldest brother, Levi Alexander and sister, Christine Alexander-Culberson.
