Woman wanted for exploitation caught after 2 years

JACKSON – A woman on the run for the past two years has been picked up in Texas and returned to Mississippi to face charges of exploiting a vulnerable person, said Attorney General Jim Hood.

Hazel Emmons, 50, currently of Houston, Texas, was located in Houston by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and placed under arrest on May 13.

She was extradited back to Mississippi by investigators with the Vulnerable Adults Unit of the Attorney General’s Office on May 20 to face eight counts of exploitation of a vulnerable person. Emmons was indicted on the charges by a Jones County Grand Jury in 2009 but apparently attempted to elude authorities by moving out of the state.

“Our office developed some leads that we handed over to the U.S. Marshal’s Service and they were able to track this defendant down and help us get her back to face these charges,” said Attorney General Hood. “We appreciate the network we have with the Marshal’s Office. They are a valuable resource for all of our State’s law enforcement.”

The indictment alleges that Emmons exploited a vulnerable person by using her credit card on numerous occasions to charge approximately $20,000 without permission. Emmons is also alleged to have used the victim’s personal information to finance the purchase of a $25,000 vehicle.

Emmons had been privately hired to be a sitter for the victim.

Emmons was booked into the Jones County Jail where she currently remains. She faces up to 80 years behind bars.
