One woman killed another injured in accident

A woman from Greenwood was killed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, after police said the vehicle she was traveling in left the interstate and crashed into a tree.

Margaret Chochran, 70, was a passenger in a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by Anna Prophet, 61, also of Greenwood. Authorities said Prophet was traveling south on Interstate 55 on Thursday, Dec. 3, just after 9 a.m. when Prophet lost control of the vehicle.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said Prophet reportedly entered the left lane and when she came back into the right lane, her truck veered off the shoulder, hit the tree, spun around and caught fire.

Reports indicate that a passing motorist pulled the women from the wreckage. Both victims were taken to the University Hospital in Lexington. Cochran was later airlifted to University Medical Center in Jackson where she died from her injuries. Prophet, the widow of Charles “Chuck” Prophet, a former athletic director of Mississippi Valley State University, reportedly suffered a collapsed lung and multiple bruises. She has since been released from the hospital.

Beloved restaurateur dies

Local television station, WABG, reported that a beloved restaurant owner in Greenville died last week after being found unconscious. George Jerome Jackson, also known as “Peanut Red,” known throughout Greenville for his savory dishes, died Wednesday morning after being transported to the Delta Regional Medical Center. Reports indicate that Jackson, a small business icon in Washington County, was well-known for his Soul Food restaurant on Nelson Street in Greenville. Jackson, 64, recently served as Grand Marshall for the Little Winn Parade. Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 12 at the True Vine M.B. Church in Greenville.

Former police officer pleads guilty to federal charges

William Gerald, a former Clarksdale Police Officer, appeared before U.S. Judge Michael Mills in Oxford last Thursday where reports indicate that he plead guilty to being an unlawful user of a controlled substance as well as possession of a firearm. Local news reports said that Gerald, a former K-9 unit handler with the CPD, was indicted by the Grand Jury in July and he will be sentenced to prison in early 2010.

US Marshalls capture Ohio fugitive in Leland

A man wanted on charges of aggravated murder in Cleveland, Ohio, was arrested on Sunday after authorities said he hid out there after the alleged incident. Timothy Smith is charged with the Sept. 23 shooting death of 26-year old Reginald Fain, also of Cleveland, when Smith allegedly shot him while he stood on the sidewalk. Authorities said Smith has been on the run ever since the shooting. Local reports indicated that the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshall’s tracked Smith to a relative’s house in the Mississippi Delta. Smith is currently awaiting extradition back to Ohio where he will appear in court on aggravated murder charges.

Man shoots girlfriend and another man

A Metcalf man was arrested last week for allegedly shooting his girlfriend in the leg and then shooting another man in the back. Hermon Lattimore was taken into custody shortly after the incident on Wednesday, Dec. 2, for allegedly shooting Lorine Dumas at the Park Center Apartments in Metcalf before he reportedly shot Edward Jones. Lattimore was charged with aggravated assault, domestic aggravated assault and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The condition of the victims is not known.

Police believe that a second shooting that occurred on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 3, was also related to the earlier shooting, when authorities said two dogs that belonged to Hermon Lattimore were shot and killed. Police believe the shooting was in retaliation of Lattimore shooting of Dumas and Jones.
