JACKSON, Miss. (AP) _ Police are investigating a fight between former Congressman Chip Pickering and a youth-league soccer coach who says he was wearing a neck brace when Pickering attacked him.

Master Sgt. Robert Sanders of the Madison Police Department says the incident happened Sunday after a South Madison County Soccer League game.

Coach Chris Hester says he was preparing to leave the field when Pickering started yelling at him. Hester coaches the team that played Pickering’s son’s team. Hester says Pickering pulled him from his vehicle and spectators had to separate the two.

Calls to Pickering’s office were not immediately returned. The Republican served 12 years in the U.S. House, and left office in January.

A city judge will decide whether misdemeanor simple assault charges can be filed against Pickering.
