Two utility clerks indicted for embezzlement

JACKSON – Two women who worked for the city of Collins as utility clerks have been indicted for embezzlement after scheming to receive city services for free. State Auditor Stacey Pickering said plan devised by Rachel Jones and Tracey Posey was uncovered after a thorough investigation from his office.

“Our investigation indicates that these individuals accomplished this embezzlement scheme by using the city provided water, electricity, cable and garbage while not paying the bill for the usage of these utilities,” said Pickering. “Embezzlement by public employees continues to be an issue in Mississippi, and it remains very important for our local governments and state agencies to hold its employees to the highest level of accountability in order to fully protect our taxpayers.”

Pickering said Jones was employed by the City of Collins as Deputy City Clerk for approximately 16 years, and Posey served as the City’s utility clerk since June 2005.

Both Jones and Collins were terminated on February 23, 2009.
