Some bridges icy in North Mississippi

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is announcing a winter weather alert for motorists traveling through the state. As freezing temperatures continue to plague the state, icy accumulation has been reported on some bridges and overpasses in Holmes County in Mississippi.

In addition, motorists should also be aware of icy precipitations on roadways in Carroll and Montgomery Counties.

MDOT is asking all motorists in these counties to use extreme caution when traveling on these roads and overpasses.

MDOT personnel are continuing to monitor Mississippi roadways and crews are placing de-icing material on bridges and overpasses that have accumulated icy precipitation. Motorist are encouraged to buckle up for safety, drive safely, stay alert and slow down, especially when driving in wintry weather conditions.

While many across the region were greeted with snow early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service, in Jackson, expects these cold conditions to continue well into Monday night, with some snow in isolated counties possibly lingering on the ground for a few days.

MDOT will make more weather alerts available as needed.
