Family tried to put it out with garden hose

Harrison County officials said a couple burning leaves in their yard accidentally set their house on fire last Thursday. Authorities said the man and his wife were burning the leaves when the fire got out of control and spread to their trailer. The couple tried to fight the blaze with a garden hose, but flames soon engulfed their home.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, but the house was a total loss. The man was treated for minor smoke inhalation and the family was later referred to the Red Cross for housing assistance.

Woman’s body found near truck stop

Jackson police said the body of a homeless woman was found in the woods near Interstate 20 and Gallatin Street in Jackson. The woman had an open gash in the left side of her head. Officer Colendula Green, with the Jackson Police Department, said the police were notified by a person inside the Petro truck stop, near where the body was found.

Green said the woman was 51-years old, and they are not releasing her identity.

Two subjects were being questioned about the case, but no charges have been filed as of yet.

Robbery suspect caught in Indianola

Police believe they have a man in custody who allegedly robbed an Indianola store earlier this month and then shot the owner. Desmond Hayes was arrested on Dec. 23 and charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Authorities believe Hayes robbed the Discount Food Mart on Front Street at gunpoint, on Dec. 1, and shot the owner during the course of the robbery. Bond for Hayes was set at $200,000 and he’s being held at the Sunflower County Jail.

Welcome Center opens in McComb

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has completed a $939,236 improvement project involving site improvements to the Welcome Center on I-55 at McComb in Pike County. Improvements made at the Welcome Center includes electrical and landscaping work, and other necessary improvements that was needed as well as new sign placement. The Welcome Center was closed for improvements on Dec. 16, 2009.

The Welcome Center at McComb promotes a positive image of Mississippi and courteous, accurate travel assistance to tourists. The Welcome Center staff will be on site to resume providing outstanding customer service to the many patrons who visit the center.

The project was completed by Paul Jackson & Son, Inc., of Brookhaven, Mississippi.
