Suspect caught by police dog

A Jackson woman is in a Florida jail after she allegedly tried to run over a sheriff’s deputy with her car after being pursued for shoplifting. Latrina Newsome was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest after authorities arrested her in Fort Myers, Florida.

Deputies in Lee County, Florida were called to a shopping mall Friday night, Dec. 17, regarding two shoplifters, Newsome and Maurice Jones. The suspects jumped into their vehicle, a silver Dodge Charger, and tried to flee the scene. In the course of their escape, Newsome allegedly tried to run down the officer.

Authorities found the abandoned vehicle a short time later, and a K-9 unit caught up with Newsome who was on foot. Newsome was treated at a local hospital before she was taken into custody.

Jones, who is also from Jackson, Miss., was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, loitering and prowling.

Former Attala County Constable killed in accident

Two men were killed Friday afternoon, including the former constable of Attala County, in a head-on collision on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The coroner said Douglas Dwight Brantley, the former constable, collided head-on with 65-year old Willie Lacey, of Lexington, in the southbound lane of the Natchez Trace, just north of Kosciusko’s city limits.

The collision sparked a fire and Brantley died instantly. He was pronounced at the scene. Lacey was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Lacey had a 10-year old passenger in his vehicle at the time of the crash, and the child was airlifted to UMC in Jackson with unspecified injuries.

Clarksdale man robbed at gunpoint

Clarksdale police are looking for three suspects in connection with the armed robber of a man earlier this month. Investigators said about 11:16 p.m., on Dec. 11, the victim was approached in the 1800 block of Espy Drive by two males. A gun was pointed at the victim and the suspects demanded money.

The victim was not injured and police are still investigating.
