Man steals truckload of building materials; gets 5 years

JACKSON – A man already on probation for a burglary charge in Harrison County has pled guilty to taking a truckload of building materials belonging to a lumber company in Lauderdale County. Bryant Moore, 48, appeared before Judge Lewis Coleman and pled guilty to one count of receiving stolen goods, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said.

Moore took the truck, which belonged to Kimbrell-Ruffer Lumber Company, and unloaded its contents to an accomplice, Charles Young, without any authority or permission from Kimbrell-Ruffer to do so, Hood said.

Young also faces charges of receiving stolen goods and his case is pending prosecution. Moore has agreed to testify against Young.

Hood said Moore was quickly apprehended because a Meridian police officer, Dareall Thompson, remembered seeing the lumber truck and what direction is headed, after it was taken. When Thompson responded to the scene, some of the building materials were still on the ground.

“This is a good example of all the good our law enforcement officers do for us every day,” Hood said. “Thank one the next time you see one.”

Judge Coleman sentenced Moore to a term of five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) with four years to serve and one year suspended with one year of post-release supervision.

Moore was on probation for burglary and grand larceny and must serve the remainder of that sentence, for a total of 11 years in jail. He must also pay $1,000 to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund and $309 in court costs.

There was no restitution ordered because the victims were able to recover all of their stolen property.

This case was prosecuted by the Public Integrity Division of the Attorney General’s Office.
