GRENADA – In Defense of Animals (IDA), the international organization that operates Hope Animal Sanctuary in Grenada, is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who abandoned seven puppies near the animal sanctuary earlier this month.

IDA officials said sanctuary staff were on Carroll County Road 241, which leads to the sanctuary, when they noticed a bottomless cage turned on its side next to a towel and empty bowl.

Hope Animal Sanctuary Director Doll Stanley investigated the scene and heard “alarmed barking coming from the ravine below.”

“[I] spotted two young dogs huddled in the ravine,” Stanley said. “The frightened animals were not approachable so an IDA rescue team set humane traps.”

After several hours, Stanley said she was able to “handle” one frightened puppy who rested beside two of her trapped companions. A fourth puppy was trapped and a passing neighbor said he saw three more puppies that may have been left with those rescued. Those three puppies were found in a nearby location.

“The selfishness of people who abandon animals is mind-boggling,” Stanley said. “These innocent animals were at great risk of dehydration, attack by neighboring dogs, coyotes, snakes, and being struck by vehicles.”

Stanley said the puppies were rescued while veterinary students from Mississippi State University were performing spay and neuter surgeries for the sanctuary.

Anyone with information regarding the abandonment of the dogs should call the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department at 662-237-9283, or IDA-HAS at 662-809-4483.
