Principal fired for disciplining student

News Briefs From Across The State

Parents approved of disciplinary action

A West Amory principal is fighting to get her job back after she was fired for disciplining a student. Even though the student’s parents approved of the action, the school’s superintendent recommended that Leigh Todd be terminated as principal.

WTVA reported that while the school board did not elaborate on how Todd disciplined the student, Todd’s attorney said: “The student’s parents approved of the discipline in advance of its being imposed and had lengthy conversations with Mrs. Todd about what punishment was appropriate.”

Leigh’s attorney’s, Jim Waide and Associates, also said in the statement: “The child’s parents informed the superintendent and the school board that they are pleased with the discipline and that the child’s attitude and behavior dramatically improved after the discipline was imposed. They are grateful to Mrs. Todd for her involvement with their child. The superintendent is interfering with the fundamental right of a parent to control his or her child by attempting to terminate Mrs. Todd.”

The school board said a tentative hearing has been scheduled for April 11 to further discuss the matter.
