Suspect and victim were friends

A Horn Lake man has turned himself in to police after shooting his friend in the stomach while the victim was attending a baby shower. Police said Marvin Clark, Jr., has surrendered after an incident on July 18. Authorities said the 23-year old victim, who was not named, was attending a baby shower at a residence in the 6000 block of Tealwood when he stepped outside on the driveway.

Witnesses said Clark drove up in his vehicle and the two men, who witnesses said were friends prior to the incident, exchanged heated words. Clarke reportedly exited his car with a gun and shot the father-to-be in the stomach.

The victim was being transported to the hospital by private vehicle, when friends flagged a police car that was passing by.

The victim was reportedly in stable condition at The Med in Memphis.

Police are still looking for a motive in the shooting.

Man robs Junior Food Mart

Hattiesburg Police are looking for a man that robbed a local convenience store at gunpoint on Saturday. Authorities said the incident occurred on July 24 at the Junior Food Mart on 14th Avenue and Hardy Street around 8:45 p.m.

The clerk told police that a medium-built black man entered the store wearing black clothes and a black ski mask. The clerk said he showed a gun and took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register.

The clerk was not injured and police are still searching for the suspect.

14-year old drowns in Grenada

Investigators are still trying to determine how and why a 14-year old Grenada Middle School student drowned in a pond behind her home. The body of Alexis Beck was found last Wednesday after her family reported her missing.

Reportedly, Beck, her sister and some friends were seen walking towards the pond behind Beverly Drive, and Beck was wearing a swim suit. Neighbors said the friends were going to give Beck a swimming lesson.

Relatives said after 4 p.m., they became concerned and began a search for the teen. Police searched the woods and discovered Beck’s body in the pond.

Beck was transported to the crime lab in Jackson for an autopsy and the case remains under investigation.
