Two children thrown from the vehicle

Highway officials are still investigating an accident that sent seven people, including two children, to the hospital. WTVA reported that around 3:45 p.m., on July 26, an unidentified driver was traveling on U.S. Highway 45 North, just south of the Saltillo exit.

The tire blew out on the victim’s SUV and the driver lost control flipping several times, going through the median and coming to a final rest on its roof. Two of the five children inside were thrown from the vehicle.

The children ranged in age from 9 months to 9-years old. Reportedly, only the infant was in a car seat.

Two children and the driver remain hospitalized, while the second adult was treated and released.

Lexington man dies after hitting tree

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said a Lexington man was killed Monday morning when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a tree. Curtis Price, 54, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 12 when he ran off the road, overcorrected and crossed the westbound lane. Price then left the highway and struck the tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation

Alleged rapist caught after foot chase

A Humphreys County man accused of raping a 13-year old girl was taken into custody after leading authorities on a brief foot chase. Calvin Jefferson was arrested on July 21 after authorities received several tips as to his whereabouts. Deputies said Jefferson reportedly assaulted the young girl on July 1 and was believed to be hiding in Belzoni.

When Jefferson spotted the authorities, he allegedly ran through several Belzoni neighborhoods in an effort to avoid arrest. He surrendered shortly thereafter.

Authorities are also looking to charge friends of Jefferson’s who reportedly helped him hide while there was a warrant for his arrest.
