Made it to the Final Jeopardy round

An English professor at the Mississippi University for Women walked away with more than $27,000 after she missed a question during the Final Jeopardy round putting her in third place. Dr. Nora Corrigan’s run on the popular trivia game show ended Wednesday with her winnings totaling $27,201.

Corrigan is originally from Reston, Va., and holds multiple degrees in English from The College of William & Mary and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Corrigan spent a year as a visiting assistant professor at McKendree University in Illinois before starting at MUW in August 2008. She currently teaches Shakespeare, English Literature I and II, and composition.

Corrigan qualified for the show by taking an online quiz first and then advancing to the two stage screening process.

Man shot checking catfish pond

Sunflower County authorities are still looking for a suspect in connection with a shooting that occurred on July 19. Authorities said a local man was checking the oxygen level on a catfish pond about 1:30 a.m. that morning when he was shot several times. The shooting occurred on Preacher Road near the Quiver River Bridge.

WABG reported that the suspect or suspects drove away in a burnt orange Crown Victoria or LTD.

The victim suffered gunshot wounds to both arms and his left thumb.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations has been called in to assist with the case

Thieves steal $134k in copper from closed factory

Rolling Fork authorities said thieves broke into an abandoned factory and stole about $100,000 in copper from the structure. On July 22, officials found that the copper wiring from the building had been taken totaling about $134,000. Authorities believe the thieves broke in the building through the side door.

Police also said the building had been broken into several times before, but this time the thieves left their tools behind at the scene.

There in no suspects in custody.

Vandals sought in Sidon park

Leflore County officials are looking to prosecute anyone connected with the recent vandalism at the Sidon Community Park. District Five Supervisor Robert Collins and Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham toured the park and found that the fence was broken and a ladder to a slide and a park sign was stolen.

The county spent about $2,000 on repairs for the park, but warns vandals that future acts of vandalism will not be tolerated.

Leflore County has plans to revitalize the park by adding a baseball field and bleachers. Completion of the project is slated for 2012.

Air conditioners stolen in Clarksdale

The recent hot weather in Mississippi has spawned a rash of burglaries in Clarksdale where thieves have made off with several home air conditioners. Captain Robbie Linley, of the Clarksdale Police Department, reported that four air conditioners have been stolen in less than a week. One was taken from a home in the 1000 block of Anderson Blvd., and three were taken from a residence in the 800 block of Catalpa Street. A guitar was also stolen from that home while a TV and a DVD player were stolen from a home in the 700 block of McKinley Street.

Linley also said that several cars were recently burglarized with several CD players being taken, stereo speakers, an I-Pod, a battery booster and an amplifier.

Police continue to warn residents not to leave anything visible in their cars and to lock the doors when they leave the vehicle.
