Man shoots woman after being told to leave her apartment

PACE – A Bolivar County man has been charged with aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied dwelling after he allegedly shot a woman in the stomach after she told him to leave her apartment. Wayne Jones, 46, appeared in Bolivar County Justice Court, on Nov. 18, after allegedly shooting 62-year old Joanne Jackson.

Investigator Charlie Griffin, with the Bolivar County Sheriff’s Department, said Jones had been staying with Jackson a few days when she asked him to leave her residence.

“He wasn’t her boyfriend or anything like that,” Griffin said. “But she told him he couldn’t stay there because he wasn’t on her lease. He had gotten put out of somewhere else he was staying, and he went over and wanted to spend some nights with her, and after a few days she asked him to leave.”

Griffin said Jackson was standing behind the door of her apartment talking to Jones at the time of the alleged assault.

“She was more or less talking to him through the door, saying ‘You can’t stay here,'” Griffin said. “And Jones pulled a gun and shot Ms. Jackson in the upper abdomen.”

Jones fled the scene and residents of the apartment complex notified police. Jackson was transported to a local hospital and was scheduled to be released some time this week.

Griffin said witnesses to the shooting identified Jones and he was arrested without incident at another residence shortly thereafter.

The weapon used in the shooting has not been recovered.

Griffin said Jones has not been uncooperative in their investigation, but appeared in Bolivar County Justice Court on Nov. 18.

Bond for Jones, who has no prior convictions, was set at $50,000.
