News Briefs From Across The State

Two families injured in wreck

An Alabama man was killed Saturday night, and his daughter seriously injured, when they were involved in a head-on collision in Lowndes County. Sixty-eight year old Douglas Dailey was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities said he collided with a pick up truck.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol said Dailey was traveling east on U.S. Highway 50 when he and 43-year old Ken Trull collided. Trull, also of Alabama, was traveling westbound on Highway 50. The accident occurred near Steens.

Authorities said the force of the crash caused Trull’s vehicle to spin around in the roadway and Dailey’s SUV landed in a nearby ditch.

Dailey’s daughter, Dana, was also injured in the crash, as were Trull and his two teenage daughters. All victims were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus with undisclosed injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Disabled man dies after being beaten

A 61-year old Jackson man has died from head injuries he sustained in a beating earlier this year. Samuel Mason died on Nov. 16 at University of Mississippi Medical Center after being beaten on July 10. Mason was physically and mentally disabled after having Rheumatic fever as a child.

Authorities said Mason’s mother found him lying on the ground across the street from his house in the 3000 block of Marydell Street. Mason had been savagely beaten.

Mason’s clothes had also been ripped from his body, and relatives believe his attackers may have been looking for money.

An autopsy on Mason has been ordered before Jackson police classify his death as a homicide.

Charges dropped against MDOT Director

Charges of disorderly conduct and public drunkenness against Larry “Butch” Brown, the Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation, will be dropped if Brown attends an anger management class.

Brown was arrested in July after an altercation with security at the Beau Rivage Casino.

Investigators said Brown, who was in town to speak at a Mississippi Economic Development Council meeting, fell asleep at a penny slot machine and then got into an altercation with a casino security guard who asked him to leave the property.

Brown argued that he had a hotel room upstairs and refused to leave the property. His arrest followed.
