JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State University Athletics Department has named Larry McNeil as its interim women’s basketball coach for the 2011-12  season.

McNeil, who had been an assistant coach with the Lady Tigers from 2001-2008, comes back to Jackson State following a season as an assistant coach  at North Texas last season. While at Jackson State McNeil helped the Lady Tigers win the SWAC titles in 2002-03 and 03-04 with consecutive 23-win seasons.

As a member of the Jackson State staff he coached Amie Williams who was the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons and a first-team all-conference player.

“I’m very excited to be back at Jackson State,” said McNeil. “I have

always said that Jackson State women’s basketball is a sleeping giant and now it’s time to awaken that giant.”

The Lady Tigers won four regular season conference titles and appeared in the WNIT three times during his coaching tenure at Jackson State. “A successful season for me right now will be a 12-6 conference record, because the bonding period that has to occur will take approximately a month. The team has to get to know me and I have to get to know them and they have to know how I want things done.”

McNeil was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1989-92 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant during Desert Storm.

“It is a pleasure to bring Coach McNeil in to guide our women’s basketball team,” said Dr. Vivian L. Fuller, JSU’s Director of Athletics

He is married to Gloria McNeil. The couple has three sons, Antonio,

Jonathan, and Marco.

Jackson State will begin a national search to name the full time head coach late in the spring of 2012.
