JACKSON – Attorney General Jim Hood confirmed Wednesday that a Jackson Police officer has been arrested and now faces charged of accepting a bribe.
Richard McGahey, 43, of Clinton, has been indicted by a Hinds County Grand Jury for allegedly accepting a bribe in exchange for granting a field release for a suspect.
McGahey was arrested Tuesday night on the charge by investigators of the Attorney General’s Public Integrity Division with assistance from the Jackson Police Department and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office.
McGahey presently serves as a sergeant with JPD.
WJTV reported that according to the indictment, McGahey came across Ambreya McElroy in May 2011. McElroy had a warrant out for her arrest. Investigators accuse McGahey of not arresting McElroy after accepting a bribe of $250.
Asst. Police Chief Lee Vance says McGahey is on administrative leave with pay pending an outcome. He says the sergeant has been on the force for about 20 years.
The Attorney General’s Public Integrity Division has been working with the FBI on this case. JPD officials said they will launch their own investigation, WJTV reported.
McGahey was arraigned in Hinds County Circuit Court Wednesday morning in front of Judge Jeff Weill, who set bond at $15,000 and trial for February 11, 2013.
If convicted, McGahey faces up to 10 years behind bars.
The case is being investigated by Keith Denson and will be prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Stan Alexander of the Attorney General’s Public Integrity Division.
