Hinds Co. District 1 invites constituents to ‘Take a Bite Out of Crime’

HINDS COUNTY, Miss. — What do Hinds County Supervisors President Robert Graham, McGruff The Crime Dog and Darth Vader have in common?  They all want to “take a bite out of crime” in District One.

Graham is sponsoring his First “Take a Bite Out of Crime” Fall Carnival featuring special appearances by McGruff and Darth Vader.

The carnival will be held on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event will be held in North Jackson at Parham Bridges Park, Ridgewood Road in District One.

There is no rain date scheduled.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and the Jackson Police Department will participate to provide crime prevention information and to display equipment, tactics/techniques and answer questions. “We want our children to know that our law enforcement officers are their friends; they protect and serve,” Graham told The Mississippi Link. “Too many of our children have a fear of the police, and that should not be.”

When asked whether his idea for holding the carnival is prompted by the recent rash of crime taking place in the capital city, he responded that crime is a concern. However, it was not the only reason hosting the event. “The carnival will be a fun day, coupled with vital information parents and constituents may use in helping to keep their families safe.”

According to Graham and his organizers, part of District One’s mission is “to have a positive impact by increasing awareness as a tool to decrease the crime rate and to stimulate community involvement and participation by providing a variety of social opportunities to encourage networking in creative outlets.”

“We plan to have something for everyone,” says Sonja Gilbert, special projects officer, coordinating the event for District One. “We will have information and exhibits for the adults, games for the kids, and plenty of food for everyone.”

There will also be a space jump for the children’s enjoyment.

Graham explained that although the carnival is being held for District One residents, everyone is encouraged to come out and join the fun.

Carnival attendees may find parking at the park and surrounding facilities.
