Chastail Warriors finish perfect season with championship

The Chastain Warriors claimed the Jackson Public Schools City Championship Oct. 28. In front of a good crowd the Warriors prevailed 44 to 32 over Siwell Middle School.  Marquisian Chapman and Malik Dean each scored multiple times propelling their team to victory. Chastain jumped out to an early 13 to 0 lead in the first quarter.  Chastain came into the championship game sporting a high powered offense averaging about 35 points per game with a defense that was not allowing their opponents to score. That’s a combination for a championship on any level.

However, the Siwell Cougars did not make it to the big dance without having a good team of their own. Joshua Moncure and Cordarius Lawyer led the Cougars back after they were trailing by 13.  Moncure scored on a quarterback sweep and Siwell converted the two point conversion bringing Siwell within 5 points. Siwell entered the game with only one loss on their record. The defense played lights out most of the season and caused several turnovers.

As the game moved on, it became a shootout. Chastain scores, Siwell scores, Chastain scores, Siwell scores. The back breaker for the Cougars was a fumble late in the fourth. The Warriors took advantage of the extra possession by scoring a few plays later extending their lead to 12.

Siwell gained a few yards but were ultimately stopped on fourth down. Chastain took a knee, their coach received a Gatorade bath, and their fans cheered wildly.  Chastain finishes 7 and 0, Siwell finishes 5 and 2.  The futures look bright for Murrah, Callaway, Forest Hill, and Jim Hill.
