Free screenings, gospel combine for good health

The Jackson Heart Study Community Engagement Center and the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) are sponsoring a free event this weekend featuring free health screenings, health talks and a gospel choir competition.  

 

Unfortunately, Black Mississippians have a history of adverse health outcomes from chronic disease. Through screenings, you can find out if you are diabetic or have high blood pressure and take action to control them to reduce the risk of illness and death. 

 

WHAT: Music for the Heart and Soul: Be in Good Health Symposium and Gospel Choir Competition 

 

WHEN:  8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2024 

  

WHERE:        Jackson Convention Complex, 105 E. Pascagoula Street, Jackson 

 

The screenings are open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include: 

  • Blood pressure 
  • Blood sugar 
  • Vision  
  • Dental 
  • Bone density  
  • Rapid HIV 
  • Syphilis 
  • Range of motion  

 

Registered guests can attend the choir competition beginning at 10 a.m. Enjoy musical selections from the following:

Note: MSDH’s Victor D. Sutton, Ph.D., MPPA, Chief of Community Health and Clinical Services, will be available for interviews during the event. Sutton is also the Principal Investigator for the Jackson Heart Study Community Engagement Center.
