Delta State gets $300,00 for music education

Congressman Bennie Thompson said the U.S. Department of Education has chosen Delta State University to receive a $300,000 grant to address and provide music education in rural areas of the Mississippi Delta through the Fund for the Improvement of Education (FIE).

The DSU Delta Music Institute will design and create a Mobile Music Lab/Studio and implement a designated music education program with upper elementary and high school teachers and students in rural school districts. This project will offer an opportunity to students in rural areas to engage in the creation and recording of original music works, which will potentially enhance and broaden student’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes about the history of Mississippi’s contribution to American music. It is also anticipated that teachers will be able to incorporate many of the lessons into their teaching plans with future classes.

Grant funds will be available for use through the FIE grant for the next two (2) years beginning August 1, 2010.
