Deputy killed responding to a call

HOLLY SPRINGS – A Marshall County sheriff’s deputy was killed Friday when she lost control of her vehicle responding to a call that turned out to be nothing, The Commercial Appeal reported. Around 7 a.m., June 25, Lt. Carol Scruggs responded to a suspicious vehicle call at a bank in Sladen.

The bank was set to open at 7:30 a.m., when personnel were alarmed by a car sitting idle in the parking lot. The bank was one of two banks robbed in recent weeks.

Authorities said as she headed to the scene, Scruggs lost control and her vehicle left the roadway on North Red Banks Road, west of Holly Springs, Her patrol car then severed a utility pole and flipped several times.

Scruggs was ejected from the vehicle before it came to a final rest in a bean field.

Scruggs, 48, was transported to the MED in Memphis, where she died from her injuries.

The Commercial Appeal also reported that Scruggs had been with the sheriff’s department for four years and grew up in Benton County. She had four children, with her youngest daughter recently graduating from high school.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
