Boy couldn’t swim

Officials said a 9-year old boy drowned after he jumped into a Marshall County canal to save his 6-year old cousin. The body of Michael Anthony Nunnally, Jr., was found around 6:45 p.m., June 25, a few feet from where witnesses said he jumped in at the Pigeon Roost Canal.

David Cook of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department said the water wasn’t deep where Nunnally went in, but dropped to about 20-25 feet deep a short distance from there.

Cook said Nunnally, who is from Byhalia, did not know how to swim.

Nunnally’s cousin was rescued by his father, and was not injured.

HUD gets grant for homeless veterans

United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson announced that The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a voucher to HUD-Veteran’s Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH).

The voucher, in the amount of $129,729 was awarded to the Housing Authority of the City of Jackson because they agreed to partner with eligible VA medical facilities as provided for in the Omnibus Appropriations Act 2010. The Appropriations Act made voucher funding available for HUD-VASH to provide rental assistance under a supportive housing program for homeless veterans as authorized under the United States Housing Act of 1937.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department gets grant

The United States Department of Justice awarded a $41,622 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to Jefferson County. Jefferson County will use the funds to support technological advances for the Jefferson County Sherriff’s Department.

Delta State University and UMC get grants

The United States Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a $25,751 to Delta State University and $47,956 to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for an Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship.
