Convicted of smuggling contraband into jail

A former Mississippi Department of Corrections criminal investigator is serving a two-month jail sentence for bringing contraband into a local prison. Chandrina Perry, 30, turned herself in to police last week and she is serving her sentence at the Sunflower County Jail.

Perry, also a former alderwoman in Shaw, was arrested last year on five counts of introducing contraband into a prison, including cell phones. Perry was arrested by her own department.

Perry later cut a deal with prosecutors before her sentence was handed down by Judge Margaret Carey-Mccray.

Substance abuse grant awarded for inmates

The United States Department of Justice awarded the Mississippi Division of Public Safety Planning a grant to assist inmates with substance abuse. The Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners grant, in the amount of $457,711, assists local and state governments to develop and implement substance abuse treatment programs for state and local correctional and detention facilities.

The program will also create and maintain community-based aftercare services for offenders.

Suspects sought in Columbus robberies

The Columbus Police Department is searching for the suspects involved in two separate robberies. The first incident was on June 18 at America’s Best Value Inn on U.S. Highway 45. Police said around 6:30 p.m., a suspect approached the victim who was staying at the motel, and then fled on foot.

A short time later, two men tried to rob another man at his home in the 600 block of 31st Avenue. When the victim opened the door to his apartment, two black males pulled a gun and entered his home.

When the victim tried to fight the two suspects, the pair fled through the parking lot of the apartment complex on foot, police said.

One of the suspects was wearing a ski mask, a black t-shirt and jeans and the other was wearing a camouflage jacket and jeans, police said
