Victim was running for sheriff

WTVA is reporting that a Calhoun County constable died last week while bush hogging on his family’s property near Bruce. On May 12, Steve Bryant, 61, was reportedly cutting along a ditch bank when the tractor he was driving overturned pinning him underneath.

WTVA said Bryant’s family became concerned when he didn’t come home and could not be reached by phone.

They found the crash site about 11 p.m. Thursday night and called the authorities, who later said Bryant died instantly.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene as did the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department. A wrecking service was also called to lift the tractor up out of the ditch.

Sources said Bryant, who was completing his first term as constable, was running for sheriff in this year’s election.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 14, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce.

Man killed when pickup truck and 18-wheeler collide

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that killed a 76-year old Monroe County man on Friday. Sam Willis, Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene on May 13 when authorities said the pick up truck he was driving collided with an 18-wheeler on Highway 45.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to a hospital in Aberdeen while a passenger in Willis’ truck was airlifted to a Tupelo hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The incident remains under investigation.

Meth lab discovered in Gulfport

Authorities in Gulfport discovered an active meth lab and a wanted fugitive while attempting to serve a search warrant at a residence. Captain Chris Loposser of the Gulfport Police Department said officers went to a residence in the 1200 block of Tropical Cove on April 6 and later found about a gram of methamphetamine and a 9mm handgun.

Officers also found Donovan Cowart at the residence. Cowart is wanted in Alabama on prior drug charges.

Ryan O’Donnell, Nicholas Harmon and Cowart were arrested and charged with manufacture of methamphetamine, generation of hazardous waste and possession of two or more precursors used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Two other people, Matthew Golf and Rebecca O’Neil, were also charged. Golf with possession of methamphetamine and O’Neil with possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.

All five suspects were taken to the Harrison County detention facility. Loposser said bonds for each suspect range from $50,000 to $150,000.
