$586K repaving project to begin near UMC and football stadium

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. announced Thursday, July 19, a $586,000 project to repave a section of North State Street.

Johnson made the announcement during a groundbreaking ceremony at an entrance of the University of Mississippi Medical Center and State Street.

“This is going to be paid for out of our bonding. So, we are very pleased to add this to the list of projects that was made possible through the 2009  $26 million dollars bond,” said Johnson.

In addition to the repaving, the project also includes replacing the curbs and widening sections of the street between Broadway and Seneca by about six feet to address safety concerns. Sidewalk repairs and restriping work will also be performed.

The mayor emphasized that the project will improve the section of State Street, which serves as one of the most traveled commuter routes into Jackson from Lakeland Drive to the various businesses, the medical center and the Jackson Medical Mall. Johnson said that the durability of the resurfaced street “typically lasts about eight to 10 years.”

APAC Mississippi, Inc. is the contractor for the project and Neel Shaffer Engineering did the design for the project the mayor indicated as he pointed out. Also on hand for the announcement was UMC Associate Vice Chancellor Dr. David Powell, who expressed his gratitude for being a part of the partnership with the City of Jackson.

“This (the street project) will help us accommodate those 20,000 people that come and use our campus everyday of the week.  We appreciate what is happening here. Mayor Johnson, thank you so much,” Powell said.

Work is scheduled to begin next week, and according to the mayor, it should take approximately two weeks to complete.

When asked what impact this project (work) would have on upcoming football games, the mayor said it would be completed before getting into the heart of the football season and that the project would be very beneficial to stadium goers as well.
