Arkansas man gets 5 years for leasing someone else’s land

An Arkansas man has been sentenced to five years in jail for leasing land to hunters that didn’t belong to him, Attorney General Jim Hood said.

Seth Bradshaw, 35, of Pigott, Arkansas and formerly of Sunflower County, appeared before Judge Bettye Sanders for sentencing after pleading guilty to three counts of false pretense.  […]

Songwriter Johnny Russell gets country music marker in Moorhead

Country music singer-songwriter Johnny Russell was the latest recipient honored with a marker on the Mississippi Country Music Trail. The marker unveiling was at 101 East Delta Avenue in Moorhead.

Governor Phil Bryant, who was born in Moorhead, offered remarks during the ceremony.

John Bright “Johnny” Russell (1940-2001) was born and raised in Moorhead and went on to become a star of the Grand Ole Opry and a popular country recording artist, with such hits as “Catfish John” and “Rednecks, White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer.” […]

Rev. George Lee honored with Miss. Freedom Trail marker

On Friday, May 10, the Mississippi Freedom Trail honored Rev. George Lee with a marker in Belzoni. The event was at Green Grove M.B. Church at 603 Church Street in Belzoni. This is the 11th Mississippi Freedom Trail marker to be unveiled.

“The Mississippi Freedom Trail recognizes both the celebrated and lesser known heroes of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Malcolm White, director of the Mississippi Development Authority’s Tourism Division. “This marker helps to preserve Rev. Lee’s legacy and to educate Mississippians and visitors alike on his role in the fight for justice and equality.” […]

Man murdered over 2 cigarettes

Police Chief Richard O’Bannon said a local man has yet to have his preliminary hearing after he allegedly shot and killed a man over two broken cigarettes.

O’Bannon said 20-year-old Mark Haney Jr. is being held without bond for the Dec. 15, 2012 murder of 26-year-old Lonnie Brooks.

O’Bannon said the altercation between Haney and Brooks began around 10:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Royal Ridge Apartments on Gillespie Drive in Indianola. […]
