Lady Mustangs push Lady Bulldogs to the limit

Two of the top girls program in the state battled Friday, Dec. 17. One school, a girl’s dynasty with over 8 state championships and another school aspiring to accomplish the same legacy one day.

Murrah’s girls so far this season have been up and down.  That is by Murrah’s standards.  The team strolled into Friday’s matchup with 8 wins and 3 losses. Two of those losses were at the hands of top programs, Yazoo City and Clarksdale. Callaway also added a defeat to Murrah. When those two play records don’t matter, they just don’t like each other. The lady Bulldogs entered the matchup undefeated with 9 wins. Lanier’s girls steamrolled their competition, winning each game by double digits.

True to form, Lanier jumps out of the gate fast. Layups, three pointers, free throws, oh my! Lanier jumped out to a 15 point lead during the second quarter. Murrah rallied. The lady Mustangs applied some pressure defense of their own. Combined with the defense of Murrah and a let down by the lady Bulldogs, Murrah entered halftime only down 8.

The game tightened up even more in the fourth quarter. Desire and strategy were the keys to winning this game. Lanier turned to its inside game to seal the game. Kierra Jordan’s post play drew fouls on the Lady Mustangs. Jordan scored 11 points and gathered crucial rebounds down the stretch. Lanier’s Dominique Brothern led the team with 14 points and a host of steals.

Kalisha Washington and Briana Gray paced Murrah with 13 points each. When the final horn sounded, Lanier remained undefeated with a 49 to 44 victory.  Lanier improved to 10 & 0 and Murrah dropped to 8 & 4.
