Thanksgiving period crashes kill 2, injure 67 in Mississippi

crashJACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Highway Patrol says two people died on state and federal highways over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Monday, the agency said it worked 171 crashes, which included 67 injuries. State Troopers wrote more than 5,000 citations and arrested 67 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

On Sunday morning, a one-vehicle crash killed 60-year-old Amy Trau of Avon, Illinois. Michael Trau, 60, lost control of a Chevrolet Trailblazer, which overturned on northbound U.S. 45 in Wayne County. Amy Trau was pronounced dead at Wayne County General Hospital.

Before dawn Thursday, 42-year-old Carnell Gardner of Itta Bena was killed in Leflore County when his Lexus left U.S. 82, re-entered and crossed the centerline, and hit a Freightliner truck. Gardner died at the scene.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
