State kicks off “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign

JACKSON – State officials agree that while it is an exciting time in Mississippi, with students heading back to school and football season fast approaching, there is a growing problem of alcohol abuse.

Because football parties, tailgating and other end-of-summer social gatherings, often involve alcoholic beverages, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, the Mississippi Highway Patrol, and other law enforcement agencies statewide are urging Mississippians to choose a designated driver.

To crack down on drunk driving across the state, the “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” campaign officially began on Friday, Aug. 20 and will run through Labor Day, Sept. 6.

State troopers, county sheriff’s deputies and local police will use extra patrols to stop drunk drivers and hopefully limit the number of alcohol-related accidents that often lead to serious injuries or death.

Last year, 245 lives were lost on Mississippi roadways because of alcohol abuse.
