MADISON, Miss. – Police said they found a suspect dead after

a 10-hour standoff at a home in the Lake Caroline subdivision of Madison County.

Officers entered the home at about 11 p.m. and found the suspect dead in his bathroom, according to Madison County Supervisor Tim Johnson.

The county sheriff told the Clarion-Ledger that the standoff, which began at about 1 p.m., was a result of an incident that began in the city of Madison. Trowbridge said the man, who neighbors have identified as Keith Mitts, began firing as authorities were serving a warrant at his home at 109 Southampton Circle.

Madison County Supervisor Tim Johnson spoke to Trowbridge about the standoff throughout the day. Johnson said Trowbridge told him that Mitts was wearing a bullet-proof vest and was heavily armed.

A woman who lives two doors down said she heard at about 30 gunshots. When she came outside, an officer took her and her three children to the golf course and told her to stay there. Some homes were evacuated and deputies were turning cars around that approached the area.

“I was just watching the boys and the officers came in to let us know we had to evacuate the area,” resident Richie Lester said.

Deputies believe Mitts was alone in the house and no one was injured, Johnson said. His wife and son are believed to be at the Madison Police Department.

“He was a nice guy,” said neighbor Tom Turner. “He is married to a girl named Arena from Moscow. He provided for them well as far as adjusting to life here in America.”

Turner said he thinks Mitts had a military background.

Madison County Schools Superintendent Mike Kent said Madison Station Elementary School and Germantown Middle School were put on lockdown for a brief period, which means that no one was allowed to enter or leave the schools.

The lockdown was lifted, but the students who live in the Hampton Circle vicinity were held at the schools until their parents picked them up, Kent said.

Law enforcement evacuated the houses near the scene of the standoff and refused to let people living near the house back in. The Lake Caroline subdivision opened its clubhouse for displaced residents to gather and wait.
