Man convicted in death of cyclist

A Calhoun County man could get up to 33 years in prison after he was convicted of killing a Dutch cyclist on the Natchez Trace while under the influence of morphine. Wendell Blount, 58, was convicted by a jury in federal court for the death of Esther Hageman.

Court records showed that Hageman, a journalist, was on vacation in Mississippi, when she was hit by Blount’s SUV near Houston, Miss., on April 22, 2009.

Blount said he saw the cyclist in the distance, but was checking his vehicle’s mirrors when he hit her from behind.

WTVA reported the case was heard in federal court because the Natchez Trace is federal property.
