Driver and aide failed to see the child

Harrison County school officials say a 4-year-old boy was left on a school bus for about four hours.

Superintendent Henry Arledge told The Sun Herald the bus driver picked up the boy Monday in the Pineville community and headed to the Harrison County Child Development Center. There was an aide on the bus with the driver to help with the children.

Arledge said the aide got the kids off the bus except for the 4-year-old who was asleep on the seat.

The bus driver went to Three Rivers Elementary, where the bus stays parked during the day. When the driver got back on the bus about 1:15 p.m., the boy was found.

Arledge says the youth was not injured. He says Gulfport police are investigating.

Ex-chief sues city over 2009 firing

Former police chief Steve Bingham’s wrongful termination lawsuit against the city of West Point has been rescheduled for trial on Sept. 4.

Bingham sued the city in federal court in 2009.

The Daily Times Leader reports that the case was scheduled for trial this week in federal court in Aberdeen. It had to be rescheduled because of another case was being heard.

Bingham was fired in August 2009. He alleges in his lawsuit that he was fired because he is white and a majority of the Board of Mayor and Selectmen is black.

The city contends that Bingham’s claims are unsupported by the facts surrounding his termination.

Bingham is now chief of police in Booneville.

Child airlifted following accident

The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues its investigation into a traffic accident on Highway 15 south of Ingomar. An MHP spokesperson says an 18-wheeler and another vehicle are involved in the accident at the intersection of County Road 107 in Union County that occured on Wednesday.

Troopers say it appears the semi-truck was behind another vehicle heading south on Highway 15 that slowed to make a turn.

They say the driver of the 18-wheeler, Jeffrey Dugal of Bloomington Springs, TN, felt he couldn’t stop in time and moved into the north bound lane to try and avoid a crash.

The truck collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by Charles Beard, 62, of Myrtle.

Beard was taken to the North Mississippi Medical Center with injuries, and a 12 year old in the pickup was airlifted to Lebonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis.

Their conditions are unknown at this time. The accident remains under investigation

Juveniles charged with burglary and arson

An arrest has been made of two juveniles for burglary, arson and malicious mischief at the 12th St. Recreational Complex. The two juveniles, both 15 years old, admitted to breaking into the concession stand.

Once they left the concession stand they went to a commercial tractor and began placing mulch and sticks into the diesel tank of the tractor making the tractor inoperable.

Then they allegedly went to the press box and set it and a garage can on fire.

The fires were extinguished by the Pascagoula Fire Department. Both juveniles were taken to the Jackson County Youth Court.
