Man admits to sex with 14-year old
An appeal of a Grenada man accused of having sex with a minor was denied by the Mississippi Supreme Court. Rodrick Maggitt, 49, pleaded guilty to having sex with a 14-year old girl in Grenada County Circuit Court and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with seven years suspended.
After his sentence, Maggitt questioned his attorney’s ability and asked the court to rehear his statutory rape case. The Mississippi Supreme Court upheld Maggitt’s conviction and denied his request.
Itta Bena Police Chief retires
After two years on the job, Itta Bena Police Chief Marvin Flowers has retired. Flowers announced his retirement first to his staff and then to local media outlets.
“I would like to…thank the community for allowing me to be the chief,” Flowers told WABG News. “And I want to thank my beautiful staff who welcomed me and allowed me to be an effective chief. But the time has come for me to spend more time with my family.”
Prior to his position in Itta Bena, Flowers had been a police officer in Indianola for 23 years.
Flowers position as police chief remains open.
Greenwood School Board has new president
Amid high controversy, the Greenwood School Board has appointed a new board president. Barbara Gray, a former school board member, was elected by the school board after serving as a member since 1991.
Gray takes over the position previously held by Margaret Clark. Clark’s term expired in December 2009.
Clark was at the meeting and presided until Gray was formally nominated and approved, WABG reported.
Controversy over the school board seat came when newly elected Greenwood mayor, Carolyn McAdams, tried to appoint Samantha Milton to Gray’s presidential post. McAdams nomination was rejected and voted down by the Greenwood City Council.
The Greenwood School Board now has an open seat with Gray’s tramsition to president.
