PONTOTOC – Two toddlers who wandered away from their homes met the same fate this weekend. As Webster County officials deal with the death of 2-year-old Kye Mitchell found Monday morning in a pond about a quarter mile from his home, authorities in Pontotoc County said a 21-month-old boy wandered away from his mother and drowned in a nearby culvert.
The Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department said Mobley Robinson was found in a culvert behind his home on Old Natchez Trace Road near Highway 342.
Mobley’s mother, Meagan, told authorities she was unloading the family’s vehicle about 3:10 p.m., and within a matter of minutes the young boy was gone.
About 20 volunteer searchers including the county’s rescue squad, friends and neighbors began searching for the youngster.
The Pontotoc Progress reported that Mobley was found about six feet inside a large culvert that lies in a small creek approximately 50 yards behind the family’s home.
The culvert crosses the driveway that leads from the house out to the barn, the sheriff’s department said.
“During the search a neighbor crawled up inside the culvert and was barely able to spot the young boy,” one official said.
The unresponsive youngster was quickly loaded into a deputy’s car and rescue squad members attempted to resuscitate the boy on the way to Pontotoc Hospital.
Mobley’s father, Matt, is reportedly in Scotland on business. In 2008 to 2009, Matt was also an editorial designer for The Pontotoc Progress.
Pontotoc County Coroner Kim Bedford said the toddler is being sent to the Mississippi Crime Lab for an autopsy.
