Probation officer arrested

JACKSON – A former officer with the Mississippi Department of Corrections has been arrested on charges of embezzlement and extortion, Attorney General Jim Hood said.

Gerald D. Jones, Jr., 31, of Edwards, was arrested by investigators with the Public Integrity Division of the Attorney General’s Office following a six-count indictment by a Hinds County Grand Jury.

The indictment alleges that Jones, while employed as a probation officer with the Mississippi Department of Corrections, took money in exchange for probationers assigned to his case load being released from probation early.

“We were assisted in this case by the FBI and the Mississippi Department of Corrections,” said Attorney General Hood. “These federal and state partnerships are the key to a comprehensive crackdown on crime.”

Jones was arraigned before Judge W. Swan Yerger in Hinds County Circuit Court and released on a $3,000 bond.

Jones’ trial date has been set for Sept. 13, 2010.
