Police officer suspended with pay

A woman who went into premature labor claims a police officer was too aggressive with her when she was arrested. Tammy Warrant said she was pulled over during the week of April 17 – 23 and subsequently arrested by Leland Police Office Terry Thomas.

Warren was eight months pregnant and reportedly went into labor in her jail cell.

Warren was transported to a hospital where authorities said doctors were forced to deliver her baby because of stress on the infant and the mother. Doctors also said there was excessive fluid around the baby. Warren was reportedly hospitalized on April 24 and the baby was born on April 25. The baby was later placed on a ventilator.

Officer Thomas has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.

Traffic stop nets money, guns and drugs

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said a routine traffic stop resulted in a felony drug arrest and the confiscation of drugs, guns and money. Byrd said on April 27, K-9 deputy Richard Palmer conducted a traffic stop at the 172 mile marker on I-10. Palmer noticed the vehicle was traveling dangerously close behind another vehicle.

While speaking to the driver, 33-year old Ft. Walton Branch, Florida native Carlos Bell, Palmer could smell the strong odor of marijuana.

A search of the vehicle revealed approximately three grams of Hashish, a strong concentrated substance which is derived from marijuana, as well as two handguns and $200 in cash.

Bell was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Adult Detention Center where he was booked and charged with one count of felony possession of Hashish while in possession of a firearm.

His bond was set at $50,000.

Two men charged in deadly hit and run

Authorities said two men who allegedly hit a 61-year old woman in a car accident and then fled the scene have been charged with negligent homicide. Brandon Beckley, 21 and Takei McFarland, also 21, were involved in an accident with Paula Hester about 10:30 a.m., on April 22

Beckley and McFarland fled the scene and Hester was taken to a Tupelo hospital where she later died.

During an investigation by the Tupelo Police Department, Beckley and McFarland were taken into custody and their bond was set at $200,000.
