One escaped inmate captured, another still at large

MADISON – While authorities in Madison County have recaptured one inmate who walked off a work detail late Friday afternoon, police in Clay County are still searching for another inmate that allegedly cut through the jail’s fence and made his way to freedom.

Officials at the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) reported Madison County Community Work Center inmate Christopher Thrasher missing Friday about 3:20 p.m., after he allegedly left his work detail at the Auto Shop at the Madison County Road Department on Highway 51 in Canton. Thrasher reportedly left the site about 2 p.m.

Thrasher was last seen wearing his MDOC state-issued green and white striped pants with a white MDOC shirt with “MDOC Convict” printed on the back.

Thrasher was in jail serving a 21-year sentence for burglary convictions in Lee County.

Thrasher was taken into custody around 8 p.m. Friday when he was spotted walking down the street just north of the city limits. Thrasher was arrested by the Madison Police Department, and now faces an additional five years in prison for escape.

Authorities in Clay County, however, continue their search for 24-year old Amonty Young who was discovered missing about 2:45 p.m., Friday.

Chief Deputy Eddie Scott of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department said Young, reportedly cut through an interior gate covered in razor wire and then scaled an exterior gate and escaped.

Young was discovered missing during an exercise call, authorities said.

Young, who has a history of evading authorities, was being held on a bench warrant for charges of escape, felony fleeing and uttering forgery. He had been in custody for several months and was waiting for the next term of Clay County Circuit Court.

Deputies believe Young may still be in the West Point or the Golden Triangle area.
