Nursing home employee gets 5 years for stealing $12k of residents’ money

Kristi Johnson (pictured) was sentenced to five years in jail, one to serve, after she confessed to taking more than $12,000 from a residents' trust fund from the nursing home where she was employed.

JACKSON – A former nursing home employee was sentenced to five years after pleading guilty to taking more than $12,000 from the residents’ trust fund. Thirty-one-year old Kristi Johnson appeared before Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Bill Gowan and entered a guilty plea to one count of embezzlement.

The court sentenced Johnson to five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) with one year and a day to serve and the remaining four years suspended. Johnson must also serve five years post-release supervision and pay restitution to the nursing home.

Court documents showed that while employed with the now closed Comperes Nursing Home in Jackson, Johnson was responsible for maintaining patient accounts.

Audits by the Mississippi Department of Medicaid and Department of Health revealed discrepancies in the account and reported them to the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Attorney General’s Office for further investigation.

Johnson later admitted to taking $12,673.75, from the nursing home’s Resident Trust Fund Account.

In addition to her jail time, Johnson must also pay a $1,000 fine plus court costs, a $1,000 payment to the Mississippi Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund and $1,000 restitution to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for associated costs.
