1)  The Jackson Housing Authority (JHA) will begin accepting applications for the Midtown Homes (2 and 3 bedrooms) currently under construction on October 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and also from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Applications will be distributed and accepted at 301 Adelle Street. JHA has established a preference for working families, where the head is employed at least 20 hours per week. As required by HUD, families where the head, spouse, co-head, or sole member is a person age 62 or older, or a person with a disability, will also be given the benefit of the working preference.

 

2) MS Construction Education Foundation will sponsor a commercial carpentry class for individuals age 18 to 24 years old. The class is offered at no cost to those who qualify, but pre-registration is required. Registration and the first class will be at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 12. 3) Midtown Partners will be battling to win “Best Red Beans & Rice” title at Trustmark’s Red Beans & Rice Celebration scheduled for Saturday, October 16, 2010, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Trustmark Park. This annual family favorite supports Stewpot Community Services’ mission in the metro area.

In a nod to the Halloween scheduling, this year’s theme is “Big Easy Beans–Laissez Les BEAN Temps Roulez” (Let the Beans Time Roll). Judges will award prizes not only for the best beans, but also for the most creatively decorated booths, while the Peoples’ Choice award will be decided by the voting public.  As always, children are encouraged to dress up in costume and come prepared to trick-or-treat.

4) Project Innovation Afterschool will host literacy in language arts workshop for Brown Elementary, Rowan Middle, Project Innovation, and Midtown parents on October 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The workshop will be held in the library of Rowan Middle School (136 East Ash Street). Shalondria Washington, a curriculum specialist with Jackson Public Schools, will facilitate the engaging session. Come and enjoy some fun while learning ways to help your children.

 

5) Midtown Neighborhood Association will hold a block leaders meeting on October 18 at 6:00PM. The meeting will be at 1319 North Lamar Street. For more information, contact Jennifer West at (601) 212-1374.

 

6) The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation in partnership with the Jackson Police Department will be hosting a National Crime Rally on Tuesday, October 19 starting at 5:30PM. The event will be in the Jackson Medical Mall parking lot and feature schools, churches, neighborhood associations, elected officials, and many others. 7) Brown Elementary School is participating in the SunnyD Book Spree. The program will donate 20 books when the school sends in 20 SunnyD UPC labels. Hundreds of additional books will also be awarded to the ten schools that collect the most labels.

 

Save SunnyD UPC labels and send them to the school. Once they’ve collected enough for 20 books, they can start collecting for the bigger prizes. 8) Midtown Partners will sponsor Midtown’s Biggest Loser3 Challenge beginning on October 25. Mid-Jackson (MidCity, Midtown, and Farish Street) residents will attend 12 weekly classes in an effort to lose pounds by eating smarter, moving more, and developing healthy habits while supporting each other. There will be a prize for the team and individual losing the most. The attachment provides additional details. 

9) The Weatherization Assistance Program is a nationwide program to assist homeowners and tenants in improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Funding for this program comes from the State and Federal Governments and is administered by local agencies. The Agency determines applicant eligibility, performs the necessary inspections and contracts with qualified, licensed and insured private contractors to complete the work. Their services reduce energy use and lower utility bills. Energy savings services may include:

 

·         Combustion appliance testing

·         Installing ceiling insulation/ventilation

·         Sidewall and floor insulation

·         Interior sealing of major cold-air infiltration areas, utilizing blower door technology

10) Unity Book Club (book club for Midtown stakeholders) will meet on October 24 at 3:00PM. The location is 301 Adelle Street (old WIC building). Be Kind to Eddie Lee will be the reading selection. 11) Brown Elementary and Rowan Middle School in partnership with the community will be celebrating their “successful” school rating on November 5. The festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m. and continue until school ends. Additional information will be forthcoming.
