Mississippi marine killed in Afghanistan

PICAYUNE – A 27-year old marine from Pearl River County was killed Thanksgiving Day on his first deployment to Afghanistan. First Lt. William Donnelly, IV, of Picayune, was conducting combat operations in Helmand province, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, when he was killed on Nov. 25.

The U.S. Department of Defense said Donnelly was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Off-duty cop shot 6 times at club

A Yazoo City police officer was shot six times Saturday night when he tried to prevent two men from bringing guns into a club. Authorities said on Nov. 27, Officer Patrick Jaco was at the House Doctor club when two men got into a fight.

Reportedly, both men went to their vehicles to get guns and tried to bring them back inside the club. When Officer Jaco told them they couldn’t, both men opened fire on Jaco and a club security guard. The security guard was shot once.

Yazoo City officials said one man is in custody and they are looking for a second.

Man shot on the street

Police in Clarksdale are investigating an incident where a man was shot walking down the street. Authorities said the victim, a black male, was walking near the 500 block of Grant Street when he heard gunfire. The victim realized he had been shot in the leg and notified authorities. His condition is unknown and police are looking for suspects.

8-year old run over by school bus

Officials in Leflore County said an 8-year old student is in serious condition at UMC after being run over by a school bus. Authorities said on Nov. 19, about 3:30 p.m., the boy was running alongside the school bus when he fell underneath it and the back tire rolled over him.

The driver was not unaware that he ran over the boy until witnesses alerted him.

The 8-year old was airlifted to UMC where he was listed in stable condition. Witnesses and the driver are being questioned by authorities.

The third-grade student attends Leflore County Elementary.
