Victim died of natural causes

Gulport police said a man who went missing on Aug. 13, was found dead four days later, apparently of natural causes. John William Champ, 61, was last seen around 6 p.m., in the area of Touriel Road, wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

Captain Neal Stachura, of the Gulfport Police Department, said an extensive search for Camp was launched on Aug. 17 and that’s when officers found his body.

“We found him in a vacant trailer in the same area,” Stachura said. “We did a real good canvass that afternoon and we found him near his home.”

Stachura said Champ lived with his brother at a residence in the 15000 block of Touriel Road. The vacant trailer was in the same block.

Stachura said coroner Gary Hargrove said Champ died of “natural causes,” but an autopsy will be performed later in the week.

“We don’t suspect foul play or anything like that,” Stachura said. “There was no physical trauma or scarring to the body and he had on the same clothes he was last seen in. But we’re pretty sure it’s a natural death.”
